When to see a retina specialist.

A retina specialist is an ophthalmologist (M.D.) who treats retinal eye disease. Treatable diseases include retinal detachments, advanced diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and many more.

Some individuals are at greater risk of developing retinal issues, and may need to see a physician more often than usually recommended. The following are common risk factors:

  • Family history of vision loss or eye disease
  • 50 years of age (or older)
  • History of Diabetes (Most diabetic patients need an annual eye exam at the very least)
  • Personal history of eye injury that required medical/surgical care

You should also be aware of symptoms that require urgent attention. See an eye specialist right away if you experience any eye problems such as:

  • Sudden visual changes
  • Sudden loss of vision
  • Eye pain, irritation or burning
  • Double vision
  • Flashes/sparks of light in your vision
  • Floaters/floating objects in your vision
  • Seeing spots or ghost-like images
  • A dark spot or curtain in your vision
  • Distortion of lines and edges
  • Loss of peripheral vision
  • Loss of central vision
  • Loss of color vision

If you notice any of the above symptoms, please contact your general ophthalmologist immediately for a referral, or call our office at (860) 444-1292.

The day of your appointment you will be fully dilated in order to get a thorough exam. This can make driving difficult, please bring a driver for your safety.

Please also come to your appointment with the following: New patient packet, a photo ID, your current insurance cards with copay or deductible payment, a list of your current medications and dosage and your eyeglasses.  Please call our office anytime if you have any questions or concerns.
